Start with the shells

Shells for crafts come from beach walks, travel souvenirs or craft shops. If you collect them yourself, check the rules for the beach you are visiting, since some areas restrict removing shells or other natural items. Choose empty shells only, never ones with a living animal inside.

Craft stores sell bags of mixed shells too, which is handy if you need matching sizes for a wreath or frame.

Clean and prepare shells

Rinse shells in water and scrub gently with an old toothbrush to remove sand and dirt. Dry them fully before gluing.

What happens when you soak a shell in vinegar? Shells are mostly calcium carbonate, which reacts with acid. A short vinegar soak can loosen mineral deposits and some build-up, but a long soak can etch, dull or weaken the shell. If you try it, keep the time short and check often. Some crafters prefer a diluted bleach soak for cleaning; if you use bleach, follow the product label, ventilate the area and rinse well.

Shells that still hold organic material may smell and need further cleaning before you bring them indoors.

Tools and adhesives

  • Hot glue is quick and works for many projects, though it can be less durable outdoors.
  • Clear-drying craft glue or two-part epoxy is often chosen for heavier shells or things that will be handled a lot.
  • A hand drill with a small bit or a pin vise can make holes for jewellery, tassels or wind chimes. Go slowly, because shells can crack. Wear eye protection and consider a dust mask.
  • Clear sealer can add shine, if you want it. Check that it is suitable for the surface.

Quick projects (an hour or less)

  • Trinket dishes: Large, shallow shells such as scallops can hold rings or earrings.
  • Picture frame decor: Glue small shells around a plain frame.
  • Shell ornaments: Add a loop of ribbon or twine to a flat shell or small starfish.
  • Gilded shells: Paint the edges with metallic paint or gilding for a more finished look.
  • Zipper pulls or bag charms: Small drilled shells with cord or a jump ring.

Weekend projects

  • Wreath: Glue shells to a grapevine or foam ring, starting with the largest and filling gaps with small ones.
  • Candle holders: Large shells can hold small candles. Use wax and wicks made for candle making, and never leave a burning candle unattended.
  • Wind chimes: Drill several shells and hang them from cord (a few macrame knots make a tidy hanger) on a driftwood or ring base.
  • Shadowbox display: Arrange shells on a backing and glue them in place.
  • Mini zen garden: Fill a tray with sand and arrange shells on top.
  • Shell jewellery or tassels: Combine drilled shells with cord and beads.
  • Shell-impressed trays or dishes: Press shells into soft clay to leave a texture. Our guide to clay crafts for adults covers air dry clay basics.

Display ideas for lots of shells

If you have a large collection, simple display often looks best: glass jars or bowls, a shallow shadowbox, or a lamp base filled with shells (use a low-heat LED light source). You can also set shells in a tray with succulents. For a flat base to put small shell arrangements on, see our coaster craft ideas. Finishing tips

  • Plan the layout dry before gluing.
  • Glue the heaviest shells first.
  • Lay a sheet of paper under your work to catch glue strings.
  • Work in a ventilated area when using paint, spray or epoxy.

FAQ

What can I make with lots of shells? Wreaths, shadowbox displays, frames, mirror borders and jar displays use many shells at a time.

Are shell crafts popular with adults? Many coastal-style decor and jewellery projects are aimed at adults, although the popularity of any craft changes over time.

Do shells need sealing? Not always. Sealing is optional and mostly changes the look.
